A quiet and peaceful morning, the water in the water heater was boiling at 110 degrees celsius and the toast grill was turned up to full power. 19 year old Joanna Lim stood with her back against the maroon cupboards of the coffestall, where she was working as a part time cashier to earn her keep during the June holidays. With cool eyes, she gazed at the earlybirds shopping for their supplies at the supermarket opposite her coffestall and registered the myraid of faces passing by her, some cool and unyielding, some filled with curiousity as their fleeting eyes rested momentarily on the signboard of the famous local coffeestall. She offered an inviting smile to a couple of potential customers, who had slowed down and were perusing the menu. Apparently not appetized by what the menu had to offer, they gave a faint dismissing smile and carried on their way. She noticed the distant wailing of a love ballad coming from the audio system of the mall. "Aaallll by myseeellf, Don't wanna beeee... Aaallll by myseelf, aaanymoooore...""My sentiments exactly." she thought to herself. She paused, cocked her head suddenly, and glanced at the supermarket opposite her. "What was that they're playing?" The faint music wafted over and she concentrated on deciphering the tune. "Oooohhhh... My luuurrve... My daaaarrrling... I've huuungerrred fooorrr... Yourrr touch... A looooonng lonely tiiiimme... And tiiiimme... goooess by... soooooo sloooowly... And tiiiimme can dooooo sooooo much..."Suppressing the hint of laughter on her face, she listened to the Battle of the Love Ballads between the supermarket and the mall in amusement. "So this the psychological weapon these organisations use to induce in their customers an irristible urge to splurge on their goods. Is there a scientific paper written on how love ballads changes the secretion of various neurochemicals in people's brains causing a deep psychological need for them to engage in retail therapy?" she mused. A flicker of movement caught her eye and she spun around quickly. Ah... a customer at last."Yes? How may I help you?" she asked in a friendly and polite tone, plastering a welcoming smile on her face. Dutifully, she took down the customer's orders and shot a swift glance at her watch."Four more hours till my shift ends. I'll survive." she thought wryly.
